Turning a transparent image

To make a transparent image to have GIMP (and so it can be used as "sprite" in a game, or as part of a website), the steps are:

0 .- Open the image in The GIMP.

1 .- In the Layers window click the right mouse button on the only layer that has our image and choose "Add Alpha Channel":
2 .- In the toolbar, choose the tool "Eraser"

and begin to remove her. What is no longer part of the image (but the transparent background) should be seen as light gray squares frame and dark gray:

3 .- Choose the tool "Fuzzy selection (Magic wand)
We click on a portion of the fund you want to delete. All neighboring pixels that are the same color will be selected as well, so we can use a larger brush to clear quickly:

4 .- When the image is to your liking, go to "Save as" (in the File menu) and give it a name ending in ". png" GIMP to know that we want to use that graphic format, which does allow for transparency, although our original image was a BMP p any that do not allow:


And if all goes well, we asked some additional details (usually not necessary to change), among which is whether to save transparency information:
